Tron: Ares Divides Critics, Dazzles with Visuals and a Killer Soundtrack

The long-awaited third installment in the Tron franchise, Tron: Ares, has officially booted up in theaters, and the initial reviews are painting a complex picture of the sci-fi spectacle. While many critics are praising the film's stunning visuals and a "staggeringly brilliant" soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails, the story and characters are facing heavy criticism, leading to a mixed and often scathing critical reception.
The film, directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Jared Leto as the titular program Ares, currently holds a "Rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes, starting in the high 50s. This places it in a similar league to its predecessors, 2010's Tron: Legacy (51%) and the 1982 original Tron (61%).

A Visually Stunning but "Mind-Bendingly Dull" Experience Critics are largely in agreement that Tron: Ares is a feast for the eyes. However, the dazzling aesthetics are not enough to save what many are calling a "mind-bendingly dull" and "emotionally hollow" film. The Guardian handed out a one-star review, describing the movie as "more a screensaver than an actual film" and lamenting the lack of "drama or jeopardy or human interest". The Telegraph was equally harsh, with a critic stating the film is "so bad it makes you wish AI would hurry up and destroy Hollywood.

The script has been a primary target for disapproval, with reviewers citing it as "messy" and more interested in loud action sequences than exploring the deeper themes of artificial intelligence. Jared Leto's performance as Ares has also drawn negative attention, with some finding it "unsettling" and "annoying". Despite the criticism, some performances have been highlighted positively, with Greta Lee and Evan Peters noted as standouts.

The undisputed champion of the film, according to nearly all reviews, is the soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. Described as "absolutely brilliant" and "a sonic wonder," the score is credited with elevating the on-screen action and being a major highlight of the cinematic experience.

The World of Tron: AresTron: Ares shifts the franchise's focus by bringing the digital world into our own. The story follows Ares, a highly sophisticated and dangerous program, who is sent from the digital grid into the real world on a mission that marks humankind's first encounter with A.I. beings. The film boasts a star-studded cast alongside Jared Leto, including Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, and the returning Jeff Bridges as the iconic Kevin Flynn. The budget for the film has not been publicly disclosed.

AresIs Tron: Ares still coming out? Yes, Tron: Ares was released in theaters on October 10, 2025.

What will Tron: Ares be about? The film follows a sophisticated A.I. program named Ares (Jared Leto) who is sent from the digital world to the real world on a perilous mission, representing humanity's first direct contact with artificial intelligence beings.

Why is Sam not in Tron: Ares?
The absence of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund from Tron: Legacy) was a creative decision by the filmmakers. Director Joachim Rønning and producer Justin Springer explained that they wanted to take the franchise in a new direction and focus on a new story and characters, rather than relying on "fan service" cameos. While there are minor acknowledgements of Tron: Legacy, the new film largely stands on its own. Garrett Hedlund has expressed his support for the new film.
