What is No Doubt famous for?
No Doubt is famous for its unique fusion of ska, punk, reggae, and new wave music that dominated the charts in the 1990s and 2000s. The band is best known for their breakthrough 1995 album, Tragic Kingdom, which sold over 16 million copies worldwide and is certified diamond in the U.S.
They are celebrated for a string of hit singles, including the international mega-hit "Don't Speak," which spent 16 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, as well as "Just a Girl," "Spiderwebs," "Hey Baby," and "Underneath It All." The band has won two Grammy Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards.
The band's name, "No Doubt," originated from a favorite catchphrase of their original lead vocalist, John Spence. He would constantly say "no doubt, man," and the phrase eventually stuck as the name for the band he co-founded with Eric and Gwen Stefani in 1986.
Two of the band's early members have passed away:
John Spence: The original lead vocalist and the inspiration for the band's name. Spence died by suicide in December 1987, just days before a scheduled performance for record industry executives.
Gabriel "The Gun" Gonzalez: The original trumpet player for the band during its early ska days. Gonzalez passed away at the age of 57 in a motorcycle accident in September 2024.
